Welcome to my seventh blog post. My main goal for this week was to research and outline the structure of my Steam page. If you didn't already know, Steam is the premier online video game distributor in the world. Being the largest company in its industry comes with benefits as well as drawbacks. The benefits mostly revolve around the fact that your page, if optimized, can reach millions of people. On the other hand, Steam hosts thousands of games, some of which are competitors. This means that in order to stand out you have to both develop a good looking steam page as well as get people to interact with that page. Games are usually displayed by popularity so if you can get a lot of meaningful interaction with your page, you will be featured more often towards the top of searches.
Coming into this week I knew that marketing was a very important part of developing a funnel to get users to the Steam page. What I have learned is that there are a lot of ways for me as a developer to maximize user interaction within Steam. To start I need to find a capsule artist to help create the capsule art for our game. The more eye catching this piece of art is, the more likely people are to visit your store page. In order to get your game on certain pages I need to choose my game tags carefully. The key to doing this is to pick the most relevant tags to your game based on what your target audience would like to see. For example, our game will have the tags: 3D, Casual, Platformer, Third Person, Relaxing, Cartoony, Comedy. Steam tags are the main way that people use to search for different types of games on the platform so maximizing the amount relevant tags used can be beneficial when looking for players. Some of the other information I need to gather are the minimum computer specs required for the game to run, as well as a format that we can use to release patch notes. Since the game is going to be in early access it may be beneficial to use Steam for playtesting in the coming future. That is a decision for this upcoming week where I will be creating the Steam page for Unsent.
